The following is a compilation of frequently asked questions and their answers.

Sagano Romantic Train
Where can I purchase tickets?

Advance sale tickets can be purchased at Midori-no-Madoguchi windows at JR West stations or at major domestic travel companies. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on the day one month prior to the ride date.
Day-of tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices at any Sagano Romantic train station. "The Rich" (open-air) car tickets are only available as day-of tickets.

Are day-of tickets for "The Rich" Car 5 sold at JR West counters?

Tickets for "The Rich" (open-air) car are only available on the day of travel at Sagano Scenic Railway ticket offices. Since there are no windows on this car, tickets may not be available due to inclement weather. For details, please see the Ticketing page.

How early can I purchase a day-of ticket?

Day-of tickets are available at the following ticket offices beginning at the listed time.
Saga torokko station   8:35 a.m.
Arashiyama torokko station   approx. 8:40 a.m.
Kameoka torokko station   approx. 8:50 a.m.
The day's tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and ticket sales might begin a little earlier than normal if customers are lined up. Please understand that depending on the day's availability, we may not be able to meet all customer requests.

When is the Sagano Romantic train ticket offices open?

Saga torokko station   8:35 - final train
Arashiyama torokko station   approx. 8:40 - final train
Kameoka torokko station   approx. 8:50 - final train
(Ticket offices might open a little earlier than normal if customers are lined up.)

I already have a reserved ticket; can I exchange it for a "The Rich" Car (open-air car) ticket?

If you have a ticket and your train has not yet departed, you may exchange a ticket at a Torokko station ticket office free of charge if there are seats available. As "The Rich" car seats are very popular, we ask that you ride in "The Rich" car only one way on your round-trip journey.

Is there a domestic phone number I can call?

Inquiries can be made at 075-861-7444, but only Japanese automated assistance is available. For inquiries in English, please use the contact form here to ask a question via e-mail.

The website shows that seats are still available. Why can't I purchase any?

Since information is not updated in real time, please understand that sometimes the tickets you wish to purchase may be sold out or otherwise unavailable.

I want to reserve a seat in a specific car.

Seats are limited based on availability.

Are numbered tickets distributed in order to manage ticket sales?

We do not distribute numbered tickets. Tickets will be sold to customers in line, in order. If a large number of customers are in line, it is possible that not all requests will be met.

What ages to the adult/child tickets apply to?

Elementary-school-aged child will need a child's ticket. Child not yet in school can ride for free on a parent or guardian's lap (one child per parent/guardian) but will need a separate (child's) ticket to ride in their own seat.

Child: 6-11 years
Toddlers: 1-5 years

Can I return or exchange a ticket?

If the train that your ticket is valid for has not yet departed, you can refund or exchange your ticket one time at the location it was purchased or at any Torokko station with the exception of Hozukyo Station. For returns, a service fee of ¥220 per ticket will be charged. Please click here for more information.

Do you accept electronic payments or credit cards?

Sagano Romantic train tickets may be purchased with cash or with transportation IC cards (ICOCA, Suica, etc.). PiTaPa cards are not valid, however. Credit cards, debit cards, JR Passes, Seishun 18 tickets and other such passes are also not accepted.

Are there different types of tickets?

All Sagano Romantic train tickets are reserved seating. After all reserved seats are sold, standing tickets will be made available (a limited number of tickets per car). After standing tickets are sold, the train will be listed as sold out.

What is "The Rich" Car?

The Sagano Romantic train is comprised of five cars. One of those (No. 5) is called "The Rich". It is an open-air car with no windows, allowing passengers to take in more of the surrounding nature.

Can pets board the train?

Small dogs, cats, and other such pets may board under the following conditions:
The pet fits comfortably and completely inside a carrier that is no more than 70cm long and whose length, width, and height total no more than 90cm; and that weighs no more than 10kg when the pet is inside. The pet's entire body, including its head/face, must not protrude from the carrier.
* A separate ¥260 fee for small baggage will be added.
* Carts designed for pets are not allowed on board as they will exceed the above dimensions.

Can I bring a stroller on the train?

Strollers can be brought on the train if they are folded first.

Can I bring a bike on the train?

No bicycles - including disassembled bicycles in specialized bags and folding bicycles placed in bags - are allowed on board.

How long does it take to walk from Saga torokko station to Arashiyama torokko station?

It takes approximately 20 minutes, and may vary slightly depending on crowds.

Local Sights
When is the best time to see the cherry blossoms, or the fall leaves, along the route?

Cherry blossoms are best viewed from late March to early April, and fall leaves from mid-November to early December. These dates may vary depending on the weather.

How long does it take to walk to the bamboo forest?

It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Saga torokko station to the bamboo forest. If you continue to Arashiyama torokko station, it takes approximately 20 minutes.

What's the closest station to the bamboo forest?

Arashiyama torokko station is the closest station to the bamboo forest.
Leave the station and head left to reach the path to the forest.

I'd like to ride the Hozugawa River Boat. Is there a special discount?

Though there is no discount, you can visit the Hozugawa River Boat Ride corner inside Saga torokko station to make same-day boat reservations. You can also book a bus, taxi, or Kyobasha carriage to take you to the boarding site. Fares and other information are available from the Hozugawa Yusen Sightseeing Boat Association.

Are there any family-friendly hiking trails nearby?

The path from Arashiyama - Rokuchotoge - Ochiai - Kiyotaki - Takao is recognized as part of the Kyoto Trail and a Tokaido Nature Trail.

Station Facilities & Services
I'm traveling to Saga torokko station by car. Is there a parking lot?

There is no parking at Saga torokko station; please use public transport. Parking is available at Kameoka torokko station; click here for more information.

Is there a place to leave my luggage?

At Saga and Kameoka Torokko Stations, you can leave one piece of luggage for ¥300 at the Railwayman Bicycle Rental shops (open until 5 p.m.). For details, please see Railwayman Bicycle Rental.

Is there a nursing room?

A nursing room is located inside the 19th Century Hall at Saga torokko station. Diaper-changing sheets are available in the men's and women's toilets at Saga torokko station, and in the accessible toilets at Arashiyama and Kameoka Torokko Stations.

Is there a waiting area?

At Saga torokko station, there is a free rest area that also serves light meals. The 19th Century Hall also has a steam locomotive on display for observation free of charge.

Is there a café?

The 19th Century Café is located inside the 19th Century Hall adjacent to Saga torokko station.

Is there a place to buy souvenirs?

Every station except for Hozukyo torokko station has a shop. Original Sagano Romantic train goods are on sale. Please click here for details.

Kameoka torokko station Rent-a-Cycle
Are all bicycle types (city, electric, mountain) available for one-way rentals?

Yes, all can be rented one-way.

Is there an additional fee for one-way rentals?

No, no additional fee is required.

What are the hours at the Kameoka Torokko branch?

9:30 - 16:00. However, bicycles are only rented out until 15:00.

When do bicycles have to be returned?

Please return bicycles by 16:00.

Can I leave a bicycle at the Hozugawa River Boat Ride boarding location?

No, bicycles may not be left there.

How far is Kameoka torokko station from the JR Kameoka Station bicycle parking lot?

If traveling directly from one to the other without any stops in between, it is approximately 3km, or about 20 minutes by bicycle.

How long does it take to explore the Kameoka castle town and then leave a bicycle at JR Kameoka Station?

The excursion should take 1-2 hours.

Where can I leave the bicycle at JR Kameoka Station?

Bicycles may only be left at the Kameoka Station Bicycle Parking Lot facing the South Exit rotary at JR Kameoka Station.

Is it easy to see how to leave the bicycle at the bicycle parking lot?

Upon bike rental, we will provide you with a "One-Way Rental" file with information.
It includes various neighborhood maps and clearly depicts buildings, entrances, and other helpful information.

When is Diorama Kyoto Japan open?

Hours: 9:00-17:30 (last entry at 17:00)

How much is the entrance fee to Diorama Kyoto Japan?

Entrance fees at Diorama Kyoto Japan are as follows:
Adult: ¥500; Child: ¥300
Visitors with a Sagano Romantic train ticket can receive a ¥100 discount.

What time does the astronomy show start?

The astronomy show starts every 30 minutes during operating hours.
The Kyoto cityscape is draped in twilight, and the lights of the town and trains begin to shine. "The starry sky, shining constellations, and the first light of dawn" are accompanied by narration.

Can I operate the control stand (master controller)?
